The model shifts during printing, the nozzle hits it, or the product detaches only after a few minutes.

Possible causes:

there is dust, grease, or remnants of previous prints on the print surface;

the distance between the nozzle and the bed is not set correctly;

the bed temperature is not suitable for the selected filament;

the first layer is applied too quickly or is too high.

What do you do? Clean the bed according to the manufacturer's instructions, check the leveling, and observe the first layer. The lines should connect properly, but the nozzle should not drag across the surface. If the filament is laid down like a loose round thread, the nozzle may be too high; if it barely extrudes or leaves marks on the bed, it may be too low.

Do not change all settings at once. First, check the cleanliness and height of the first layer, then the temperature and speed.

2. The corners of the model are lifting and the print is warping

Warping often occurs with larger flat pieces: the edges start to lift from the bed, even if the first layer initially looked good. The material shrinks as it cools, which can create tensions that detach the model.

Possible solutions:

check the recommended temperatures for the specific filament;

reduce drafts and large sudden temperature changes around the printer;

for larger models, try a brim for better adhesion, if your slicing software supports it;

check if the cooling is suitable for the selected material.

There is no single setting that is correct for all materials. PLA, PETG, and ABS do not behave the same way, so always refer to the manufacturer's recommendations for the filament and printer.

3. Filament is extruding intermittently or not at all

If the printer moves the print head but parts of the layers are missing from the model, there may be an issue with the filament feed. Sometimes the material is extruded only occasionally, while at other times the nozzle barely extrudes anything.

Check in order:

if the filament spool is unwinding freely and the thread is not tangled;

if the extruder is pushing the filament correctly;

if the nozzle is partially or completely clogged;

if the nozzle temperature is suitable for the material being used;

if the filament is damaged or its diameter is unsuitable for the printer.

Before cleaning or servicing the print head, follow the manufacturer's instructions. The nozzle and heating assembly can be very hot. Do not touch them with your hand and do not disassemble hot parts without proper procedure.

4. Thin strands of plastic are forming on the model

If thin strands appear between separated parts of the model, it is usually a phenomenon called stringing. A small amount of material oozes out of the nozzle while moving the print head, stretching across the empty space.

The cause may be too high a temperature, improper retraction settings, or moist filament. Thin strands are more common with some materials than others.

Try the following:

check the recommended printing temperature for the filament;

test the filament retraction settings in the slicing software;

check if the filament is stored properly and dry;

for comparison, print a small test model instead of immediately changing settings on a large project.

5. Layers are shifting and the model is misaligned

If individual layers suddenly shift sideways, the cause may be a mechanical issue or a lost step of the motor. Check if anything is obstructing the movement of the print head or bed, if the belts are visibly loose, and if the axes move smoothly.

With the printer turned off and following the manufacturer's instructions, check for any obstructions, loose parts, and the condition of the belts. Don't tighten them blindly: an overly tight belt can cause additional issues.

If the delays occur mainly at high speeds, try printing slower. If the issue persists even at low speed, it's sensible to inspect the mechanical parts and electrical connections according to the service instructions.

6. The model is fragile or the layers don't adhere well together.

If the product breaks along the layers, the bonding between the layers may be poor. This is influenced by the nozzle temperature, cooling, speed, chosen material, and model settings.

First, check if the printer is extruding material evenly. Then compare the temperature with the range recommended by the filament manufacturer. Excessive cooling or too low a temperature can worsen layer adhesion under certain settings, but it's not correct to simply increase the temperature for every material.

If a part needs to bear mechanical load, also check the layer direction, number of walls, and model infill. Even a properly printed piece can have a weaker point due to the direction of the load.

7. There are lumps and uneven streaks on the surface.

Lumps, small bumps, or uneven streaks can occur due to flow fluctuations, incorrect settings, issues with the nozzle, or how the software plans the start and end of individual lines.

First, check if the issue is present across the entire model or only at specific locations. If it mainly occurs at the starts and ends of lines, review the seam settings in the slicing software. If it appears everywhere, check the consistency of the feed, nozzle, and filament profile.

8. Filament snaps, breaks, or the print is unpredictable.

Some filaments can absorb moisture from the air over time. This can lead to cracking, small bubbles, rough surfaces, or uneven extrusion during printing. This depends on the material and how it's stored.

Store the filament according to the manufacturer's instructions, if necessary in a closed container with appropriate desiccant. If you want to dry it, use only the process and temperature suitable for the specific material. Excessive temperature can damage the spool or filament.

If the filament breaks before entering the extruder, also check if it's old, damaged, or exposed to unsuitable conditions. Don't assume that moisture is the cause of every issue: a tangled spool or feeding problems can also be the culprit.

9. Printing takes too long or quality deteriorates when increasing speed.

A higher set speed doesn't necessarily mean the model will be completed quickly and with quality. The printer still needs to feed the material correctly, change direction accurately, and maintain a stable temperature.

If waves appear on the walls, details worsen, or layers are missing after increasing speed, revert to a verified profile. Then change one setting at a time and, if possible, use a small test model.

For a larger printer, a different speed may make sense compared to a smaller one, but the result also depends on the design, material, nozzle, and profile. Don't rely solely on the maximum speed listed in the device description.

How to systematically troubleshoot 3D printing issues.

When a print fails, it's easiest to start changing multiple settings at once. However, this makes it hard to determine what actually helped. A better approach is simple:

Describe the symptom. If the model has come off, are the layers misaligned or is the material not flowing?

Check the simplest causes. Look at the bed, the spool, visible obstructions, and the condition of the filament.

Check the material and profile. Use the recommendations for your filament and printer model.

Change only one setting. This way, you'll find it easier to determine if the change helped.

Print a small test. Before repeating a large project, check the result on a shorter print.

Note down successful settings. This will make the next similar project easier.

Is the issue with the printer or the settings?

Before deciding on service or replacement, check if the issue occurs with different models and filaments. If only one model fails, the issue may be in the file or print preparation. If the same symptom repeats with different models, check common factors like the bed, nozzle, filament feed, and mechanical movement.

If you're considering another device or a larger build volume, you can also look at specific models on offer: 3D printer with a build volume of 300 × 300 × 400 mm and X5SA DIY 3D printer with a build volume of 330 × 330 × 400 mm. A larger build volume does not inherently fix printing errors, so check if the device suits your projects and experience before choosing.

For a broader overview, also visit the category of laser engravers and 3D printers and 3D printer label.

Frequently asked questions about 3D printing issues

Why doesn't the first layer stick during 3D printing?

The most common causes are a dirty surface, incorrect nozzle height, wrong temperature, or too fast first layer production. First, clean the surface and check the leveling.

Why do the corners of the 3D print lift?

The material shrinks while cooling and can cause the model to detach from the surface. Check the temperature, adhesion, drafts, and suitability of the settings for the filament used.

Why does the 3D printer extrude filament unevenly?

Possible causes include a partially clogged nozzle, issues with the extruder, tangled filament, or incorrect temperature. Check in order to avoid unnecessary part replacements.

How do I eliminate stringing between parts of the model?

Check the printing temperature, retraction settings, and material condition. Use a small test model to see which change improves the result.

Is the printer always to blame for poor prints?

No. The cause could be in the model, slicing software, filament, temperature, surface, or mechanical parts. First, identify the symptom and check the most likely causes.

When is 3D printer service necessary?

If the issue persists despite verified settings, if parts are damaged, or if there is an electrical or heating fault, follow the manufacturer's service instructions and contact a qualified service if necessary. Do not tamper with hot or electrical parts without proper knowledge.

Nerd's conclusion

Most 3D printing issues are easier to solve when you break them down into individual symptoms. Start with the surface and first layer, check the filament, then address temperature, cooling, feeding, and mechanical parts.

Most importantly, do not change everything at once. A small test, one change, and recording settings can save you a lot of time and filament. This way, you'll gradually find what works best for your printer and material.

The 3D printer starts printing, the first layer looks promising, but after a few minutes, the edges lift, filament builds up around the nozzle, or the final product looks like a pile of plastic strings.
