Nerd Test: XIN 768 Brushless RTR 2.4G 30 km/h Turbine Drive RC Boat

First impression

When you open the box, you get RC Boat, which immediately gives the impression of a "better model" model. I saw RC boate, which looked plastic fantastic - this one does not. The color combination (white or blue available), the shiny plastic and the turbine standout make it stand out. The package includes a boat, Battery (11.1V 2000mAh Li-ion), remote control, USB charging cable, instructions and a screwdriver - all the basics to get you started. The very appearance promises that the ride will be fun and that the boat will respond well on the water.

Build quality and materials

A combination of plastic, metal parts and electronics (brushless motor, turbine drive). The body is made of plastic and looks solid, but at the junctions with the frame and joints, the usual compromises are visible. The electronics are in a good price-quality ratio, but the servo motor and drive are not the most recognized brands. The brushless motor is a big plus - it allows for more “clean” brushless power, less maintenance, lower battery consumption. The dimensions of the boat (40 × 13 × 9.5 cm) are large enough to provide stability, but not too large to be awkward to transport or operate.

Usability / functionality

The speed of up to 30 km/h is surprisingly good for a boat in this price category. The turbine drive + brushless motor allows for dynamic running on calm and moderately wavy water. The 2.4 GHz transmitter provides a satisfactory range – ≥ 250 m is stated – in practice, interference and waves will shorten this range a bit. The playing time is estimated at about 10 minutes, charging takes about 180 minutes – which means it is not for long trips on the water without spare batteries. The boat is an “RTR” package – which means it is already ready to use.

Design

The aesthetics of the boat are “all-inclusive and nothing kitschy”: turbine engine, aerodynamic lines, color combinations, protective elements. White and blue offer a choice – blue looks more sporty, while white offers a clean look. The design of the boat is attractive to both RC boat enthusiasts and those looking for something that looks good on and near the water. The size and proportions are well balanced – not too big to be cumbersome, not too small to be toy-like weak.

Price / value

The price is very competitive considering what the boat offers – brushless motor, turbine drive, battery, “RTR”, alleged range ≥ 250 m. Many models in this class offer the same features, but often either at a lower speed, or with worse electronics, or without a turbine drive. If you take into account that the individual castings are noticeably worse, but not annoying, the value for this money is above average.

Advantages

  • Brushless motor and turbine drive offer good power and responsiveness
  • Speed up to ~30 km/h – fast enough for riding on lakes or in conditions without strong waves
  • RTR kit – everything you need is included
  • Attractive design and multiple color options

Disadvantages

  • Playtime of ~10 minutes is short; charging takes a long time (~180 minutes)
  • Materials and joints may show wear with intensive use
  • Range or responsiveness issues may occur when the water is extremely rough or when the distance is too great

Final score: 8/10
