Nerd test of Neptune 4 Max 3D printer (speed > 500 mm/s, volume 420×420×480 mm)

Hi, I'm Nerd - a fan of 3D printing, techniques, and long, detailed projects. After months of testing, I present to you Neptune 4 Max: an impressively large, fast and affordable solution for those who want to print really large models and in a short time.

Technical characteristics (summary)

Print volume: 420 × 420 × 480 mm — you can print large models such as helmets, armor or architectural models

Speed: up to 500 mm/s with acceleration up to 8,000 mm/s²; default set to 250 mm/s with option to include Input Shaping and Pressure Advance for smooth results

Processor firmware: preloaded Klipper, ARM 64-bit quad-core motherboard (1.5 GHz) with 8 GB ROM for secure processing of complex G-codes

Extruder: Dual-Gear Direct-Drive 5.2:1, with heating nozzle up to 300 °C and 60 W ceramic heater, suitable for PLA, TPU, PETG, ABS, ASA and Nylon

Automatic leveling: 121-point mesh-leveling for precise bed leveling

Cooling: powerful fan system (4015/3010/6025) directed at the extruder and plastic for faster curing without deformation

Connectivity: Wi-Fi, LAN, USB disk – allows remote control and monitoring

Dimensions and weight: approx. 658 × 632 × 740 mm, 26–27 kg – large robust construction, not suitable for small workbenches

My experience using

Composition and configuration

It takes 30-60 minutes to attach the parts. The instructions are clear, but the printer is so large that assistance is recommended – especially when placing the unit weight. After assembly, a 121-point alignment and Z-offset check are automatically performed.

Print quality and speed

When the element is set up correctly, the results are stunning – lower layer edges, beautifully finished surfaces. Klipper allows speeds of up to 500 mm/s, and using Input Shaping and other algorithms, even more reliable results. It really saves time when printing larger pieces.

Reliability

Initially, the problem was sensorless homing and loud axis knocking at the end position. After firmware updates, the operation is stable, but I recommend checking the Z-offset before each print - the built-in display does not always save it correctly.

Noise and size

The printer produces a lot of noise at high speeds due to the strong cooling. It is recommended to install the printer in an effective sound environment if you use it in a living room.

Advantages (according to Nerd)

Huge print volume for the exceptional scope of projects.

Extreme speed thanks to Klipper and powerful electronics.

High material flexibility (PLA, ABS, Nylon itd.).

Automatic leveling and stability with robust guides and cooling.

Wi-Fi and network management They allow for easy remote monitoring.

Conveniently removable PEI magnetic platform (you can remove the models after printing).

Disadvantages and limitations

Size and weight They require a lot of space and a stable base.

Sound The fan noise is noticeable – it is not a quiet printer.

Firmware errors (at the beginning) and an occasional problem with the Z-offset not being written.

Nozzle replacement (nozzle) is made difficult due to its non-standard design.

Required settingsYes, although the system is easy for beginners, we all want optimal results.

Evaluation by criteria

CategoryRating (★‑★5)Comment
Print volume★★★★★Easily prints larger models without joining parts
Speed★★★★★Up to 500 mm/s enables fast printing without sacrificing quality
Printing accuracy★★★★☆Needs calibration at higher speeds, otherwise excellent
User experience★★★★☆Quick to assemble, but requires adjustments
Stability and frame★★★★★Strong construction and efficient cooling
Price vs. performance★★★★★Zelo dober razmerje cena/volumen za <500 USD/EUR
Noise and space★★★☆☆Not suitable for those looking for a quiet home printer

Overall rating: about 4.5 / 5 ⭐

Who do I recommend Neptune 4 Max to?

It is great if:

you want to print large models (armor, decorations, mascots, components),

you have serious printing ambitions and a desire for higher speed,

You are prepared for a higher occupancy rate and you don't mind the noise level.

It may not be suitable if:

you have limited space or live in a quiet environment,

you want extremely quiet printing,

you don't want to manage additional Klipper settings.
